Travel agencies in Barcelona: what you should know before booking
Beyond the time you save, the main difference is who responds when something goes wrong. If you book on your own and the flight is cancelled, each provider refers you to the next. With an agency, you have a single point of contact who handles the issue for you. Additionally, many agencies access rates and availability that don't appear on standard search engines, especially for premium hotels, cruises and package deals. For simple trips, doing it yourself works. For complex itineraries, the agency usually works out cheaper than it seems when you add up the value of their management.
Most work with any destination, but there's an important difference between selling a flight plus hotel and truly knowing a destination. Specialised agencies (in trips to Asia, safari, Latin America or luxury tourism) have trusted local suppliers, know which hotels deliver on their promises and anticipate problems that a general agency wouldn't detect. If your trip has some complexity or a high budget, it's worth looking for an agency that focuses on that destination, not just has it in their catalogue.
A standard package combines flight, accommodation and sometimes transfers, but the details vary greatly between agencies. Before confirming, it's advisable to explicitly ask about:
- Airport taxes and checked baggage supplements
- Transfers between airport and hotel, which often go separately
- Travel insurance, which some agencies include and others offer as optional
- Accommodation basis: whether the hotel is room only, with breakfast or half board
- Visas or entry fees at destination, especially for trips outside the EU
A detailed itemised quote is the best way to compare actual offers between different agencies.
It depends on the type of trip. For a weekend getaway or a sun and beach destination in mid-season, four to six weeks is usually sufficient. For a honeymoon, a multi-country tour or a trip in high season (summer, Christmas or Easter) it's advisable to start planning at least three or four months in advance. The more customised the itinerary or the scarcer the availability at destination, the sooner you need to get started. Booking late doesn't always mean paying more, but it does greatly reduce your options.
Travel agencies in Spain are required by law to have insolvency insurance that protects customers' advance payments in case of bankruptcy. If you have booked a package holiday, European regulations protect you with clear rights to a refund or alternative trip. In case of cancellation on your part, the conditions depend on the signed contract and whether you have taken out cancellation insurance. Before paying any deposit, always ask for written confirmation of the cancellation and refund conditions, and keep all payment receipts.
