Questions You Should Ask Yourself Before Working with a Professional Photographer in Barcelona
Not necessarily. In photography, the author retains certain rights unless otherwise agreed, and what you usually buy is a usage licence, not full ownership. Clarify in writing what you can use the photos for (social media, web, advertising, billboards) and for how long, because broad advertising use is not always included in the base price.
Because the RAW is the "digital negative", the unedited raw material, and many photographers don't hand it over as a professional criterion: it's like asking a chef for half-cooked ingredients. The editing is part of their style and signature. If you really need the RAW files, negotiate it before the session, not after.
Fewer than those taken, and that's a good sign. From hundreds of shots, the photographer selects and edits the best ones; their job includes discarding. What matters is not the number, but agreeing beforehand on an approximate number of final photos to avoid misunderstandings: "loads" is not a quantity.
It's not just the time shooting. The price factors in:
- The editing hours, which usually exceed those of the session.
- Equipment, insurance and professional software.
- Experience and personal style.
- The usage rights they grant you.
Be careful with this, because it's where conflicts arise. Advertising use (paying to promote those images, putting them on billboards or packaging) usually requires a different and more expensive licence than normal web and social media use. If you plan to run campaigns with those photos, say so beforehand: including it in the initial brief is cheaper than renegotiating afterwards.
